How can i Avoid boring my classmates while I'm reporting?

Hey guys..

I will be reporting in front of our class on monday but i haven't formulated a style, technique or a "Gig" in reporting to avoid boring my classmates..

My report is about a short story and I'm going to discuss different element of the story itself.. How can I spice things up so they will listen attentively?

A game? Giving a price after answering a question? Or what?

Hope you can help me on this..

Any constructive opinion will be pretty much appreciated!!

Thanks!!

How can i Avoid boring my classmates while I'm reporting?
Before you try anything fancy with your presentation, work on how you speak first. Make sure you stand upright (making a few steps occasionally is fine) and look into your audience. Speak audibly and clearly, even loudly if you are speaking to an audience of more than 30. Smile, use appropriate gestures to emphasize certain points, it helps if you are humorous, throw them questions and respond appropriately to the answers they throw back at you. Your focus is not to entertain your audience but keep them interested in what you have to say about your short story. Be very, very passionate about the story that you are going to talk about so that you draw the others into your passion too.

That being said, a game is fine although it's not advisable for short presentations. If you have only 15 minutes to report, or less, the game would take up too much time. If you are using visual materials like PowerPoint or large sheets of paper, keep the things on the visual presentation simple and concise - aim to use as little words as possible. Wordy presentations are top borers.

All in all, be clear, concise and connect with your audience.
Reply:Try a creative interactive introdruction that will pull your audience in. Try to add inflection in your voice and not be monotoned. Good eye contact and facial expressions that fit the mood of the story are good ideas. Most importantly treat it as if you are telling a folk story and not a report. Always end with something memorable, so you can leave an impression on your classmates' minds.
Reply:When speaking, move around the front of the classroom, occasionally look up at everyone, you can try to add puns in while you are reading (not the best idea with a strict teacher) You can also talk loudly, try to project your voice, and move your voice up and down, randomly (you don't want to talk at the same pitch and tone, boring!) All of the little things count... Good Luck!
Reply:Be focused and energetic. Don't act like a nervous wreck but rather like you are content and excited. Be aware of nervous habits, such as playing with your hair or biting your nails. Practice the presentation so that you are confident and familiar with the content. Be also aware of verbal stumbling blocks, like uhh or umm. Nothing ruins a presentation like someone who is nervous, but seems disinterested, bites their nails and keeps saying uhh every other word.

Look around the room when you give the presentation and make eye contact for a second or two with each person, but in a random order (but not so you are doing it obviously).

Watch some speeches, maybe on you tube, and see what you like or don't like about them. If you want to add flavor, dress in clothes that would be appropriate to the topic, but that don't stand out during the rest of the day. If you can't, bring a prop.

In the end, practice and experience are the tools that allows you to get better at being in front of a crowd and being able to capture their attention.

Or maybe you could do a jeopardy version of a report, with prizes...
Reply:when I had to do this it ALWAYS helped that I knew what I was talking about..

that way I just kind of spoke about it like i would speak to my friends and people would pay much more attention if they just see yourself speaking about something (you should look interested in it cause if YOU'RE not interested dont expect anyone else to be) they will pay attention..

and if it's really boring you can always joke about that

=)
Reply:surprise them with change of tone, volume etc.

eg. if your talking about how the story is made to make you feel happy at the end, talk joyfully whilst saying this. try to match your voice and actions to what your saying in ur speech. interact with your classmates by going up to them and asking them questions informally by sitting on their desk or such. most of all, be confident. don't make it look like your nervous, because you'll turn them off immediately. make sure you make lots and lots of eye contact too

hope this helped!

Reply:if i were u i wouldnt do a game cuz games can be kinda corny

dont go up there and be loud and annoying

no one likes someone like that

but start off with like a bit of humor

like

hi my name is _____ and im the kid who sits over there(and point to ur seat)

u dont hav to be hysterical but u dont have to be 2 corny

the joke will losen everyone up (u included) and then jus go with the flow

speak a bit louder than usual(but not annoying)

hav like a display like a triboard(if u can)

use ur hands and get into it

dont over do the joke

and u should be fine

hope i helped!
Reply:You need to make it interesting, put your personallity in it.

I'm a blonde and love to make people laugh sooooo i always try to add somthing funny or make a comment that is funny. Just somthing to keep them interested. There were 2 boys in my LA class that would like do a skit, or sing or dance, people would talk about it for days!
Reply:You can use a powerpoint presentation in conjuction with your oral report and for the love of god don't read the written report...the main points should be in your presentation along with photos. If you want it to me interactive you can put the character names in a bag and have a certain number of students pick then have then enact the presentation as you go, everyone likes spur of the moment and it'll help in keeping their attention.
Reply:Diagrams??? make it a story not a report
Reply:okay so find details in the story you think are interesting. Also cut down on big words have enough that you don't disapoint your teacher but don't have to much because that is boring to here big word after big word. dont make the report to long cause that is boring too. then add questions about the story inside the report to have the veiwers think about the report themselves.try to fit your classmates into the report too it helps them pay more attention if they can relate to it
Reply:You seem to be under the assumption that your classmates want to be entertained. Or, at least, that they don't want to be bored. That, my friend, is where I think you're wrong.

Look, they expect to be bored. If you go up there and try to entertain them, they're going to catch on to what you're trying to do and will immediately commence to entertaining themselves by ridiculing your attempt to entertain them.

Just get up there and power through it. They'll be bored, yes, but that's probably what they're expecting anyway.
Reply:If you can relate those elements of the short story to kids directly in the class that could help.... if you try to put a funny twist on some of the report...maybe a little joke about part of the story or something to keep your audience attentive.... The best reports in school were always the ones that gave us a little laughter, and a little something to think about.... If the story is about a certain action , maybe ask classmates what THEY would do if THEY were in the situation.... audience participation is a great way to avoid boring the class...If I knew what the short story was about that you will be reporting on, I MIGHT be able to come up with better ideas for you.
Reply:use visual aids.
