I can't speak English well. I'd like to make friends with foreign classmates but I dont know how to. I'm shy.

I had come to US for about 6 months. But till now I cant improve my speaking in English. I use to silent during the time at school. No speaking, no talking. I also was like that in my old country. I don't know what to talk about with my classmates, my friends at school. And that's the reason I dont have much foreign friends to improve in Speaking English. What can I do to make friends and improve my English? Actually I just have friends who are from Vietnam, my old country too. but they dont like to speak English and I wanted to separate the Vietnamese group. but before that I need to have foreign friends. They are so hard to close, they were refuse to keep talking with me when I didnt understand. hic plz help me?

First off don't lose your Vietnamese friends. See if your school has an international club of some kind or talk to a guidance consular about clubs to join. An international club would be great since you make lots of friends who can help you better your English and I'm sure there will be some person like me who loves to help out new people and foreigners. From what I can tell though, you have great English skills. Good luck!
Reply:Well its not a matter of making friends, you could pick up a book and start reading it out loud, take speech class. Trust me I am shy and I do know how to speak english, but I still don't do very well with my social skills. I can hold more of an intellect conversation verses a social one, maybe your hanging around the wrong people when you try to get friends. Don't be afraid to say hi. Thats all it takes. One word
Reply:Practice what your going to say in front of your mirror that should help some what
Reply:If you get into volunteering, you'll meet lots of really nice American and foreign people that will be friendly and pleasant if you are too. As for speaking English, just say what you want to say, folks will try to understand you. If you want someone to slow down when they're speaking, just say so! Volunteering isn't the only thing you can do, but it's a good way to meet a variety of young people that are typically both nice and outgoing.
Reply:Don't be afraid to ask them to repeat what they said or to slow down so you can understand them. Americans can talk very fast. "Please slow down" is a polite way to ask or try "I'm studying here. How long have you lived here? Please not so fast, I'm just learning English."

Try to make friends in a place where people are not in a hurry, like a Laundromat or cafe, where people have a long time to wait. It is better to ask "Can you speak Chinese?" than to ask "Will you speak English with me?" You can also start a conversation with: "Are you also shy?" or Ask for a date for a cup of coffee or tea... "Would you like to talk over a cup of tea?" "Do you have time for a donut?" Once you can sit and relax it will also be easier to speak in English. Go to a bar (if you're 18) and take a note pad with you and write down what other people say to open a conversation. They will be curious about your writing because nobody writes in a bar. You tell them you want to learn opening lines to meet people. "How do you meet a stranger?" You will ask...and start writing down their suggestions. Not only gives you practice and good tips but people will come closer to see just what you are writing and how to better communicate with you. Good Luck!
Reply:First of all, learn all of the bad, four letter words. Second, use these words all the time, for anything, even in front of your teachers, they will give you a break cause you are learning the language. Third, learn to shot-gun a beer. Finaly, tell everyone your name is "Chops".

Now you're a party animal, everyone likes you. No one will take you seriously at first and girls will hang out with you cause they won't see you as a threat. Soon you'll be hanging out with these girls at parties and meet their boyfriends. Eventually some of the girls will get waisted and you can have your self some drunken se x!! Once you do this, you're in!
Reply:I have a foreign exchange student friend from Korea. Everyone loves her and is understanding if she misspells something or can't pronounce it. If anyone has the gall to mock you or exclude you because of where you're from and how you speak, just ignore them. Such jerks aren't worth your time.
Reply:Join a speaker club, there are many toatmasters clubs around, this club will allow you to interact with people and also give you public speaking ablility, they would love to help you. It does not cost much either, search for 'toastmasters' or speaking clubs in your area. You'll love it.
Reply:just talk loud like all the americans do!
